You’ve probably heard the word “steampunk,” and if you’re like us, wondered where in the world it came from and what it really meant. This month, we figured we’d remove the guesswork for you.

The term first appeared in the 1980s writings of science fiction author, K.W. Jeter, but the movement gained mainstream popularity in the late 2000’s through movies like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Costuming is central to steampunk culture. Steampunk fashions mix a Victorian aesthetic with the gothic and burlesque movements. Women’s steampunk costumes are oftentimes characterized by corsets, pillbox hats, and the use of leather, while men’s steampunk costumes emphasize military-style jackets and vests, or top hats paired with three-piece suits.
